Andrew Sullivan is absolutely right. When the Republicans lose the White House they will go on the attack and we’ll see Rush Limbaugh revisited, only this time he and his friends will bring the full arsenal of Molotov cocktails. Remember, it was in the 1990s when Rush grew into popularity as the Right Wing began to tap into the spirit of Ronald Reagan and oppose Bill Clinton’s policies. We saw other radio jocks jump in on the fight, people like Michael Savage and other nut bags. The next fight in the culture wars won’t be so lame. I believe you’ll see the birth of vicious Republican attack dogs that make Don Imus seem like an ineffectual choir boy and Ann Coulter the good witch from the east.
But I digress. Hugh Hewitt’s interview with Victor David Hanson was a pretty good read. Hanson does seem to have a good handle on the geopolitical realities involving Iran and the Middle East, but I think he’s over-optimistic about General Petraeus. Likening him to Sherman is a stretch. But if he did pull off a Sherman-like victory I think you’d see a pendulum swing in middle-America’s fickle conscience. As long as we win it’s “Go, team!” The moment the tide turns against us they’re packing their bags and heading for home. There’s hardly been a talk of the morality of this war from the very beginning. While Hanson is correct in that the Bush Administration has done a lousy job of defending the Wilsonian policy from the very beginning, the Democratic Party has done just as lousy a job of pointing out that there is an inherent immorality in that mode of thinking. Perhaps it’s because they don’t believe it is immoral to attack another nation without just cause. Perhaps. And that saddens me to no end.
