Egyptian bloggerALEXANDRIA, Egypt (AP) — An Egyptian blogger was convicted Thursday and sentenced to four years in prison for insulting Islam and Egypt’s president, sending a chill through fellow Internet writers who fear a government crackdown.

Abdel Kareem Nabil, a 22-year-old former student at Egypt’s Al-Azhar University, had been a vocal secularist and sharp critic of conservative Muslims in his blog. He often lashed out at Al-Azhar - the most prominent religious center in Sunni Islam - calling it “the university of terrorism” and accusing it of encouraging extremism.

Islam suffers from negative publicity due to its most extreme elements. Nations like Egypt and Syria say they want freedom and democracy but when they have the opportunity to prove it just seem to pass it by. Nations that practice Islam and practice Islam as their national religion must be able to take criticism. Without openness and transparency, freedom and democracy are not possible.

(Source) It seems like the Episcopal Church is being forced to choose between its gay and lesbian members and its membership in the Anglican Communion.
The challenge is how far are we prepared to go in working with the Communion and squaring that against the relationships we have in our community with members who are gay and lesbian. I would like to think that the Communion needs to hear the voice of the Episcopal Church as well. I am prepared to work quite hard to maintain connections in the Communion, but if it comes to having to choose between the Communion and abandoning my gay and lesbian brothers and sisters—much as I value the Anglican community, I think they will be the losers.

The real shame here is that a church that as 2,000 years of history behind it has unrepentantly blasted its way beyond the line it was challenged to cross. The Church has experienced many splits and schisms. Founded over the issue of divorce, the Anglican Communion has run head on with popular American culture and it seems to be headed straight to the courthouse again. It hardly seems there is any other alternative when bishops like the Right Reverend Mark Sisk and his opposing counterparts are both saying the same thing - when it comes to resolution, the only one acceptable is to agree to disagree. The conservative faction of the American Episcopal Church ought to be just give all the property to the liberals and start over from the ground up.

Priest

A Romanian priest has been jailed for 14 years for conducting an exorcism that led to the death of a nun who he believed was possessed by devils.

Why, oh why, didn’t he just send her to a psychiatrist?
